Who is Laura James ?
Here is a snippet from Laura's site ....
I was born and raised on a small ranch in Vanderhoof, BC where my love and passion with horses and barrel racing began at a young age. At the age of 4 I started out on an old appaloosa pony named Suntag, as well as a big sorrel quarter horse named Charlie who both won me many trophies in the local gymkhana events. Soon my parents, who both competed as well, (my dad calf roped and team roped and my mom barrel raced), were hauling me and my younger sister to BCRA rodeos where we both barrel raced and break-away roped competitively.
Through out the years of rodeo my desire and passion to become the best barrel racer and horsewoman that I could be, grew immensely. With the help and support of my parents and a special aunt and uncle, I was riding with some great teachers and clinicians. I am blessed to have a very supportive family that helped me be well mounted on some great horses, and those are the true teachers. One particular special horse that comes to mind is deck (special deckatan). My dad bought him as a seven year old calf horse who I soon stole and started pattering and roping off of. He proved to be one of the great ones with a huge heart. These were not expensive all ready made horses but they were safe and broke and we made them into barrel horses and rope horses, sometimes with growing pains and mistakes, but we always learned something from each of them, building both the horses confidence and ours along the way.
